Some see travel as an escape, or as a form of surrender. Others, and one hopes they are the greater number, throw themselves into it, draw strength from it, and turn it into inspiration. Tamise, a nomadic duo, clearly belongs to the latter camp.

Juliette and Jon met in 2019, on the eve of the pandemic. She is from Brussels, an actress and violinist; he is from Bordeaux, a dancer and guitarist. Together, they sing and write songs. Silence Island, the title track, also became a soundtrack of sorts for lockdown life; they wrote it at a friend's request.

In 2021, they left their home, chose life as street musicians, and spent three years travelling across several European countries where they performed and wrote new material. Back in France, they brought that journey to a close in the corridors of the Paris subway under the “Musiciens du Métro” banner, where they played with growing regularity and named their project Tamise, after light, gold seekers, the river, and even the word “tame”, in the sense of learning to tame and make the world one's own.

They finally dropped anchor in Bordeaux in 2024. Silence Island, their debut album, recorded with Nicolas Dufournet at Studio MELODIUM in Montreuil will be released by Talitres just before summer. There was no wish here to tamper with what gives the project its character. In the name of authenticity, and to ensure that the voice remains central to the music, the songs were recorded exclusively with travel-sized instruments: a ¾ classical guitar, guitalele, violin, pocket trumpet, bass ukulele, harmonica and kalimba.

Across these songs, Tamise reveals a delicate, poetic folk sound, fragile and luminous, where vocal harmonies, most often in English, sometimes in French, weave closely through the melodies. Their songs speak of love, wounds, travel, and the darker and brighter parts of ourselves. And when one looks at the path they have taken, with the street as their first field of expression, the street as a way to tame the world and be tamed by it in return, one suspects they have no intention of standing still just yet.

Certains envisagent le voyage comme une fuite ou comme une forme de renoncement. D'autres, et on les souhaite les plus nombreux possible, le saisissent à bras-le-corps, s'en nourrissent et s'en inspirent. Tamise, duo nomade, fait assurément partie de ceux-là.

Juliette Bertrand et Jon Debande se rencontrent en 2019, à l'orée de la crise sanitaire. Elle est bruxelloise, comédienne et violoniste ; il est bordelais, danseur et guitariste. Ensemble, ils chantent et écrivent des chansons. « Silence Island », titre éponyme, tient aussi lieu de bande-son du confinement ; ils le composent à la demande d'un ami.

En 2021, ils quittent leur logement, décident de devenir artistes de rue et parcourent, durant trois ans, plusieurs pays européens où ils chantent et composent. Ils bouclent leur périple dans les couloirs du métro parisien, y jouent avec une assiduité croissante et baptisent leur projet Tamise, pour la lumière, pour les chercheurs d'or, pour le fleuve, et enfin pour « tame », soit « apprivoiser », « dompter ».

Ils jettent l'ancre à Bordeaux en 2024. Silence Island, leur premier album, enregistré au studio MELODIUM, à Montreuil paraîtra chez Talitres à quelques encablures de l'été. Nulle envie, ici, de dénaturer ce qui fait le sel du projet. Dans un souci d'authenticité, et afin de laisser une place centrale au chant, les titres sont enregistrés exclusivement avec des instruments de voyage au format réduit : guitare classique ¾, guitalele, violon, trompette de poche, ukulélé-basse, harmonica et kalimba.

Au fil de ces morceaux, Tamise dévoile un folk sensible et poétique, fragile et lumineux, où les harmonies vocales, le plus souvent en anglais, parfois en français, tissent des liens étroits avec les mélodies.

Un monde de fumée, de gin et de regrets, un mode de mélancolie, de cuivres et de cordes. Un monde de raffinement et de probité. La vie dans ce qu'elle peut nous offrir, avec ses barques de joies et de tristesses. Les compositions de Peter Milton Walsh sont de véritables chansons en ce sens où elles racontent des histoires, des histoires qui nous accompagnent et que l'on peut chacun terminer. Le propre d'une grande œuvre sans doute.

The Apartments en tournée française dès cette semaine. Sur scène P.M Walsh sera accompagné de Tim Kevin (claviers, guitare, chant) et de Jeff Crawley (trompette, percussions) : les amateurs de musique habitée reconnaîtront là une occasion rare de retrouver un groupe devenu, au fil du temps, une véritable référence de la scène indépendante.

Maxwell Farrington & Le SuperHomard (Christophe Vaillant) are storytellers. Through their lyrics, orchestrations and arrangements, their compositions unfold as allegories, journeys into worlds where pop meets lushness and reverie.

Since Once (Talitres, 2021), the Franco-Australian duo has cultivated a way of life, an aesthetic – silky, sunlit, and timeless.

Rock icons know quality when they hear it: Iggy Pop championed them on his BBC6 show, Paul Weller brought them along on European tours and invited Christophe Vaillant to Abbey Road Studios for the recording of his album 66.

The duo naturally turned to England to produce their new record.

Window Tax, their third album, was recorded in Margate, a short train ride from London, with Mike Lindsay, co-founder of Tunng (spearhead of the folktronica movement) and holder of the prestigious Mercury Prize in 2009 for his production work on Speech Debelle's Speech Therapy.
