• Stéphane Milochevitch // Thousand

Biography

Since the release of his mesmerizing album “Le Tunnel Végétal” in 2018, Stéphane Milochevitch, also known as Thousand, has been injecting inspiration into our daily lives and dreams. His music, marked by pointed yet poetic lyrics, is delivered with a blend of raw sincerity and sharp wit. In fact, these musical pieces stand out as some of the most brilliant and captivating French pop compositions in recent memory. Shortly after, his vibrant yet misleadingly laid-back album called “Au Paradis” surfaced in the distinct landscape of 2020. Its labyrinthine tunes seemed to be caught in a state of half-sleep or semi-wakefulness. One can’t help but wonder if there was any other way for them to emerge.

The first album released under Stéphane Milochevitch’s own name, “La Bonne Aventure", out Oct. 13, 2023, maintains this distinctive trajectory. Known for his compelling wordcraft and ambition to break boundaries, Milochevitch successfully shuffles the creative deck, scrubbing away predefined categories and labels. With this release, we find ourselves fully immersed in his creative vision.

The stripped-down track titled ’Le clou dans le bois de la croix’, is more of an invitation than a song. It plays with silence, breath, and resonance, seeming to fade out to make room for the journey ahead. Once again, we are greeted with cryptic yet familiar poetry, nonchalant singing, and an unshakable sense for captivating melodies.

Each of Milochevitch’s songs is akin to a wave, with the waves forming contrasting territories. In these lands, the musician boldly discards the traditional constraints of French song. He morphs into a myriad of characters, spinning an intimate tale that invites listeners to lose and find themselves, often surprising their own reflection. The unknown, the forbidden, the unseen, and the unspeakable—all these elements become part of the narrative journey.

Milochevitch is known for his clever wordplay, and there is a lot of that on ‘Thousand’. Like some of the other acts on Talitres, there is a slight likeness to Matt Berninger and his band, and ’Song of Abdication’ in particular is an unlikely mix of the National and early Depeche Mode. ’The Wave’ is a groovy number, while ’Eden’ is fast and 80’s-influenced and for me the highlight of the album.Pennyblackmusic

“Fuck all the haters”, sings Milochevitch on ‘The Sea The Mountain The Ghost’ but there are unlikely to be many of those after hearing this record. It’s a dark, alternative-pop album that simply sparkles with musical gems.Sounds XP
